Thlog#2

Looking at the genre generators this week has helped further my understanding of different genres can be composed of and the way in which though the conventions of different genres can be extremely different, the underlying structure and guidelines are ubiquitous. I also really liked the way in that the in class assignment in which we analyzed the conventions of different genres (country music and horror movies) helped us identify themes and structures that can characterize a lot of different genres and helped bring to mind questions about the tone as well as the purpose of each genre. I enjoyed the fact that we were asked to analyze a meme generator because it’s something that is extremely popular on all forms of social media. This exercise forced me to take something common and analyze it in a more critical way which forced me to look at it from a whole different perspective by analyzing conventions that I had never noticed before. I think it was very interesting that many people identified the structure of each genre and later went on the identify the conventions that were based around the structure. I found the readings extremely useful especially the part about rhetorical situations and it’s three components exigence, audience, and constraints. Throughout my analysis of each genre generator I tried to relay each of the structures and conventions to those three components as each genre generally seems to cater to vastly different audiences and and exigencies. The constraints help to form the structure of each genre. I found by keeping these three situations in mind throughout each analysis of these genre generators helped me develop a more critical sense of approaching the structure and conventions by keeping in mind the audience that were being catered to as well as the way in which the audience helped form the constraints and exigencies.
